PICKPOCKET ARRESTED AND SENT TO PRISON

A Bulgarian national resident in Spain was arrested by CID officers on 2nd December for theft after enquiries led Detectives to identifying her operating in the town centre.

ELEONARA GEORGIEVA TOSHEVA of calle Rio Turon, Piso10, Mijas, Malaga, dob 2 5 86 was spotted by Detectives in Main Street after one of the officers recognised her from CCTV footage seized concerning a theft that had been reported to police on Monday 30th November 2009. A female customer had her purse stolen from within her handbag whilst in a shop in Main Street. The purse contained £200 in cash, a debit card, driving licence and two I/D cards. The shop's CCTV captured the thief and this allowed police to identify the suspect.

At midday on 2nd December CID officers observed TOSHEVA in Main Street and recognised her from the CCTV footage stealing the woman's purse. She was arrested for this theft and kept in custody pending further enquiries were carried out. Detectives tracked down her movements prior to arrest and were able to establish that in fact at 1130hrs Tosheva had also stolen yet another purse from a lady's handbag, this time from a shop within the ICC. On this occasion she had managed to steal a further £200 and other personal documents. This victim had also reported the theft to Police.

TOSHEVA was charged with two separate counts of theft and appeared before the Magistrates Court on 3rd December. She pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 4 weeks imprisonment.

The arrest comes in the immediate wake of the RGP's launch of their pickpocket awareness campaign and are very pleased with the support retailers, the media and community in general are giving. The message is evident, 'together we can deter and detect the criminal from operating on our streets'.
