The RGP has learned of a scam currently affecting several local residents. Persons advertising items for sale via Friday-Ad, and other newspapers, have found that persons, normally in the UK, answer the advertisement and agree to buy the item. In due course, a cheque for a sum much higher than the value of the goods sold is received.
When the cheque is banked, the buyer asks the local seller, that he should take the cost of
the postage of the item out of the difference, and then return the balance by Western Union, or similar means.
Invariably, the cheque is later returned unpaid, as the cheque will have been stolen, with the seller remaining out of pocket. Typically, the item for sale is for several hundred pounds, and the cheque issued by the fraudster will be in the region of £2000 - £4000.
